Neil Krug. Unique Worlds of the Dead Format

We are sure you’ve seen the works of Neil Krug without even realizing that most of them were created using a Polaroid camera. Today, we introduce you to Neil Krug and his worlds captured on the dead peel-apart format.

Peel-Apart Format and Neil Krug

The decline of the peel-apart format happened in 2016 when Fujifilm ceased the production of the legendary FP-100C. Many photographers couldn’t easily let go of their beloved format, which captivated and inspired millions of hearts. Just like other instant photography enthusiasts, Neil Krug from Lawrence, Kansas, stood up for the right of the already-dead format not to be forgotten and to remain recognizable.

Collaborations

Since 2006, the photographer and videographer has begun his journey with the peel-apart photography format. He gained great popularity and status among other enthusiasts due to his unique shooting style and numerous collaborations with various artists. The artist worked with: Lana Del Rey, Cage The Elephant, Tame Impala, First Aid Kit, Zella Day, Weyes Blood, Yeule, and more.

Neil played a crucial role in shaping the visual aesthetics for many projects of American singer Lana Del Rey. Krug created unique photo postcards and covers for the following albums: Ultraviolence, Honeymoon, Lust For Life, Chemtrails over the country club, and Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean blvd.

Neil also worked on many iconic music albums, using not only film but sometimes even graphic design. You certainly know some of them:

Pulp Art Book

"Pulp Art Book" — a monograph by Neil and supermodel Joni Garbeck, became an internet sensation in 2011. Shot on expired Polaroid film, this book reflects a grainy, sun-scorched western style. It features a variety of photos with effects like vignettes, drawing inspiration from the art and societal life of the 1960s and 70s. The book brings the spirit of those decades in a new way.

Some shots that were included in the first and second parts of the monograph:

By creating unique images and projecting fantasy onto a piece of photo paper with chemistry, Neil demonstrates that no frame has barriers when you let go of all worries and trust the film one hundred percent.
