The Art of Reusing Polaroid Cartridges

Reusing Polaroid Cartridges

We’re sure that everyone passionate about instant photography has at least once wondered what can be done with empty cartridges and how to reuse them creatively. Here are a few ideas for repurposing cartridges:

1. This is a great tip for those who purchase vintage Polaroid cameras and aren't sure if the camera still works. The most efficient way to find out is to create test cartridges for different Polaroid models. We recommend focusing on the 600 series  and SX-70 .

You’ll need an empty cartridge with a working battery. Fill it with old photos you no longer need and use it to test the camera. Be sure to label the cartridge “TEST” to avoid mixing it with fresh film.

2. It can be used to store freshly taken (undeveloped) photos. As soon as you get your photo, place it in the cartridge with the undeveloped side facing inward. This is a great way to keep the photos safe and protect them from light.

3. You can also use an old cartridge as a frame or even a photo stand.

4. A cartridge can be used as a gift frame. Simply fill the cartridge with photos and send it to friends or relatives you don’t see often. You can write a little note on the back of the photo — it’s a sweet way to show what you look like during these times of isolation 🙂

5. If you no longer plan to use the cartridge, the best thing for the environment is to recycle it responsibly. Before throwing it away, all parts should be separated and disposed of properly. It's important to remember that SX-70 and 600 cartridges contain a lithium battery.

Here’s how to recycle it:
1. Use your thumb to press the film exit slot to create a larger opening;
2. Carefully remove the spring — some edges can be sharp;
3. Take out the battery and immediately cover the terminals with electrical tape;
4. Dispose of all parts separately.

If you wish, you can keep the metal spring — it makes a nice stand for your photos.
