The Olympus Go 100 is a simple, small, lightweight, durable and modern 35mm film point and shoot camera with a 27mm Olympus fixed-focus lens. Notable features include auto film advance, electronic rewind, frame counter, red-eye reduction, and a built-in lens barrier (with sliding control that also acts as the 'On', 'Off', and 'Flash on' switch). The specs are fairly ordinary with an aperture of f/8.0, a fixed shutter speed of 1/125, and focus range from 1.2m to infinity. However the appeal with this camera is not in the numbers but rather in how the photos turn out. Sure the camera isn't capable of doing anything really clever, but it surprises us with arguably stunning photos (albeit somewhat lo-fi) each time we put a roll through one of these. On the box it claims that the lens is focus free, which adds to the disposable-like charm of the photos it produces. The Go 100 was also sold under the name 'Olympus Trip 100R' in some parts of the world, but it is the same camera. It was released at some point during the early-to-mid 2000s although we don't know the exact year. We do know it was no later than January 2005 because this camera came with a purchase receipt from this time. We can also assume it was no earlier than 2002, as it has a more modern design than the other cameras in the Olympus Trip range released in that year. The internet will tell you it was released in 1992, but this is incorrect (likely due to someone mixing it up with the Olympus Trip 100, which was released in '92 but is a different camera). The manual states it takes 100 ISO or 200 ISO film, and we would suggest sticking to these instructions due to the settings being fixed in relation to aperture and shutter speed. Theoretically it can probably tolerate a higher speed film in low light settings, but that becomes a risky game. Conveniently the Go 100 runs off two AA batteries, making it an excellent travelling companion. In summary, if you appreciate simplicity in your shooting experience as well as a lo-fi and sometimes experimental look to your photos then the Olympus Go 100 might just be the perfect thing.
