Timer in Polaroid Cameras

Timer in Polaroid Cameras

We are all used to the fact that almost all modern gadgets have a built-in photo timer function — in smartphones, laptops, and professional cameras. It's so convenient! But what about timers in Polaroid cameras? Let's figure it out!

i-Type Cameras

If you're a lucky owner of a modern i-Type camera, you definitely have a built-in timer, which is present in all modern cameras. To activate it, just press the round button with the clock icon on the front panel of the camera (the timer button location may vary from model to model). Moreover, in One Step+  and Now+  cameras, you can activate the timer via the app.

Spectra/Image

What about retro cameras? The most generous with timers are the Polaroid Spectra series, almost every camera in this series, except the Spectra 2, has a built-in 10-second timer. The placement and activation method of the timer also varies from model to model, some use a switch, while others have a dedicated button. If 10 seconds isn't enough for you, most Spectra cameras are compatible with the Polaroid Spectra remote control system. However, there is one catch: Spectra cameras are no longer supported, so they won’t be usable anymore.

Captiva/Vision

Now let’s talk about the timer in SX-70 cameras. Unfortunately, there is no built-in timer in any SX-70 camera, but all folding models have a special port on the side panel near the shutter button that allows you to connect a remote control system or even a timer. Currently, you can find the original Polaroid Self Timer #132 for SX-70 & SLR 680 folding cameras, Mint Camera Selfie Timer, as well as the SX-70 Remote Shutter Button system, both modern and original.

So, a built-in timer is a cool feature that makes a camera a more desirable purchase. We see that the modern Polaroid company understands this, and nowadays a timer in cameras is a common feature. What the management of the company was thinking in the 70s to 90s remains a mystery to us, but one thing is clear — vintage cameras with built-in timers are now truly a rare gem, as there are only 3 types left.
