Double Exposure on Polaroid 636 and Other 600 Series Cameras

Double exposure remains a hidden trick for many retro camera owners, but there are a few ways to achieve it. Here’s the simplest method.

The key idea is to open the Polaroid camera film door before the frame fully passes through the rollers. There is a risk of mistiming or exposing part of the frame to unwanted light, so to understand the mechanism better, it's recommended to practice with empty cassettes, inserting test frames beforehand.

Steps to Create a Double Exposure:

  1. Adjust the exposure compensation – Move the exposure compensation lever to the left to ensure a balanced exposure for the final image.

  2. Take the first shot & quickly open the film door – As you press the shutter button, open the film compartment. The frame will begin to eject slightly.

  3. Push the frame back into the cassette – Using another photo, a darkslide, or your fingers, carefully push the frame fully back into the cassette. Avoid direct light exposure and do not remove the entire cassette.

  4. Close the film door and take the second shot – Move the exposure compensation back to the middle (depending on your composition) and take the second exposure.
